Autodesk 3ds Max since version 2012 can save scenes to (typically 3) older .MAX file format versions. This option ("Save As Type") is offered in the commands:
  • Save As
  • Save Copy As
  • Save Selected
  • Container > Save As

You can save to the following versions:

  • 3ds Max 2012 can save to versions 2010, 2011
  • 3ds Max 2013 can save to versions 2010, 2011, 2012
  • 3ds Max 2014 can save to versions 2011, 2012, 2013
  • 3ds Max 2015 can save to versions 2012, 2013, 2014
  • 3ds Max 2016 can save to versions 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015
  • 3ds Max 2017 can save to versions 2016, 2015, 2014
  • ...
  • 3ds Max 2020 can save to versions 2019, 2018, 2017
  • ...
  • 3ds Max 2024 can save to versions 2023, 2022, 2021
